Overview
The Sixth Edition of the Indian Steel Association’s (ISA) flagship event, ISA Steel Conclave 2025, will once again bring together the country’s top policymakers, industry stalwarts, global experts, and strategic partners for an insightful dialogue under the theme “Steel for Aatmanirbhar Bharat: Driving Sustainability and Growth.”
At a time when the Indian steel sector is playing a pivotal role in nation-building, this year’s theme underscores the industry’s commitment to building self-reliance while embracing innovation, sustainability, and green growth. From advancing clean steel technologies to securing key raw materials, India’s steel ecosystem is poised to strengthen resilient infrastructure, support renewable energy ambitions, and align with global net-zero pathways.
The Conclave’s comprehensive agenda will address today’s most critical topics. Highlights include high-level discussions on ...leadership enablers for the next phase of growth, the transformative role of artificial intelligence in the steel value chain, and strategic pathways for iron ore beneficiation to ensure long-term sustainability. New focus areas such as capital mobilisation for steel’s green transition, global trade challenges and carbon border mechanisms, and robust decarbonisation strategies will explore how India’s steel industry can navigate global shifts while maintaining competitiveness.
The programme will also spotlight key enablers like modernising logistics and infrastructure, boosting efficiency and cost competitiveness through multimodal integration and digitalisation. Further, sessions will examine the rising end-user demand for green steel, bridging the gap between producers and consumers, and creating clear standards for sustainability across value chains. Special focus will be placed on shaping inclusive pathways for small and medium steel enterprises, ensuring that the transition to low-carbon operations supports livelihoods, regional growth, and social equity.
Pertinently Two-Day ISA Steel Conclave (6th Edition) and One-Day ISA Coking Coal Summit (3rd Edition) will be seen concurrently on Sept 8, 2025 and some pre-lunch session will remain common bringing deeper focus to coal’s critical role in raw material security and sustainability for steelmaking.
With its knowledge-rich sessions, expert presentations, and dynamic networking opportunities, the ISA Steel Conclave 2025 remains a vital platform for building partnerships, exchanging ideas, and driving the Indian steel sector’s growth story. Join us to connect with visionaries, co-create solutions, and contribute to India’s journey towards a greener, stronger, and more self-reliant steel industry.

Dear Colleagues, Industry Leaders, and Friends,
It is my pleasure to welcome you to the 6th Edition of the ISA Steel Conclave, organised by the Indian Steel Association.
This year’s theme, “Steel for Aatmanirbhar Bharat: Driving Sustainability and Growth”, represents our sector's collective response in the journey towards self-reliance and sustainable growth.
Your participation in this conclave reflects our shared commitment to a resilient, future-ready, and ESG-aligned steel industry. This platform offers an opportunity to ideate, collaborate and chart a course for India's global leadership in manufacturing and sustainability.
I extend my sincere gratitude to our partners, distinguished speakers, and participants. Your insights, expertise, and collaborative mindset are instrumental in accelerating innovation, strengthening supply chains, and promoting inclusive growth across the steel value chain.
Let us use this gathering to spark bold ideas and actionable strategies that not only power economic development but also set new global benchmarks for responsible steelmaking.
Together, we can make meaningful strides towards Viksit Bharat - a nation built on the pillars of strength, sustainability, and shared prosperity.
Wishing you all a thoughtful and impactful conclave.
Warm regards,
Mr. Naveen Jindal
(President, Indian Steel Association)
“As the world’s second-largest steel producer, India stands at the cusp of a transformative leap. With per capita steel consumption still below the global average, our sector holds immense potential for exponential growth - growth that must be both sustainable and self-reliant. The short-term goal of reaching 300 million tonnes of capacity is just one milestone in our broader journey toward an Aatmanirbhar Bharat. As we aspire to become a developed nation by 2047, building a Net Zero steel sector will be crucial to strengthening our economic resilience and enhancing global competitiveness. I warmly welcome all delegates to the 6th ISA Steel Conclave and look forward to the discussions that will help shape the next phase of this transformation.”

INDUSTRY OVERVIEW
India is the world’s 2nd largest producer of crude steel, with a production of 149.6 million tonnes (MT) in CY 2024, maintaining its position behind China.
Between CY 2019 and CY 2024, India was the only major economy to record a significant rise in steel production—surging by 33%, while global output fell by 1% during the same period. This growth makes India a rare success story in a largely stagnant global steel landscape.
India also remains the largest global producer of Direct Reduced Iron (DRI) or Sponge Iron, with production rising to 54.8 MT in CY 2024, accounting for approximately 38% of global output.
India is the 2nd largest consumer of finished steel, with consumption reaching 150.2 MT in FY 2024–25, up from 133 MT in 2023, second only to China, which consumed over 970 MT.
The steel sector contributes around 2% to India’s GDP and provides direct and indirect employment to around 2.5 million people in steel and allied sectors.
India is the 4th largest producer of iron ore and holds the fifth-largest reserves globally. Iron ore production crossed 270 MT in FY 2024–25, strengthening raw material security.
Under the National Steel Policy (NSP) 2017, India aims to increase its crude steel production capacity to 300 MT by 2030–31, up from the current 198.5 MT as of FY 2024–25.
To promote value-added production, a Production-Linked Incentive (PLI) scheme for specialty steel was approved with a total outlay of ₹6,322 crore (US$ 858 million) over five years.
The scheme is expected to attract investments worth ₹40,000 crore (US$ 5.37 billion) and increase specialty steel capacity from 18 MT in FY21 to 42 MT by FY27. Over 44 projects were approved under Round 1, and Round 1.1 was launched in January 2025 to widen participation.
At a capacity level of 300 MT, it is estimated that India may require an annual import expenditure of around ₹3,450 crore for proprietary equipment and spare parts.
The Indian steel sector has attracted foreign investment commitments of nearly US$ 40 billion, driven by supportive policies and robust demand outlook
According to the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT), FDI inflows into India’s metallurgical industries stood at US$ 18.47 billion between April 2000 and March 2025.
Liberalised 100% FDI via the automatic route continues to bolster both brownfield and greenfield investments in the steel sector
